To ensure a smooth experience for everyone, the airport has introduced 14 new Hybrid Self Bag Drop (SBD) counters at Terminal 2 (T2). Mumbai Airport Introduces New Hybrid Self-Bag Drop Counters

CSMIA in Mumbai has introduced 14 new Hybrid Self Bag Drop (SBD) counters at Terminal 2 (T2). What changes will it bring? The Hybrid Self Bag Drop (SBD) counters make checking in easier. Now, passengers can check in and drop their baggage at the same counter in one step. They can even pay for any extra baggage charges there, so they don’t need to go to a separate desk.

These counters can work in two ways—self-service or manual. This means travellers who want to do it themselves can move quickly, while staff can assist those who need help, like first-time flyers or elderly passengers. Self-service bag drops are getting more popular at CSMIA.

How Many Passengers Can A Single Hybrid SBD Counter Handle?

A single Hybrid Self Bag Drop (SBD) counter can handle 100–120 passengers per hour, compared to 25–30 passengers per hour at a conventional manual counter. On average, checking in a bag at a hybrid counter takes 20–25 seconds, while manual processing can take 2–4 minutes per passenger. These improvements help reduce waiting times, speed up passenger movement, and make better use of terminal space.

Right now, IndiGo and Air India are using the Hybrid SBD system at Terminal 2. Many international airlines like Lufthansa, Air France, Qatar, Swiss, and KLM already use the airport’s existing self-service bag drop and will move to the hybrid system soon. The new counters also work with DigiYatra biometric technology. Passengers who are enrolled in DigiYatra can use facial recognition to check in faster, which means they don’t have to go through manual document checks.

CSMIA has placed trained SBD assistants throughout the terminal to help first-time travellers and elderly passengers.
