Andheri Station is a major railway and transit hub on the Mumbai Suburban Railway network and serves as a major interchange point, which can cause a lot of crowding. To reduce congestion, the station will finally get a 12-car platform on the east side. Here’s what we know about this update so far.
Andheri Station In Mumbai To Get A New Exit On East Side
According to Mid-Day, Western Railway has proposed a 12-car home platform alongside the sixth line to ease peak-hour congestion and crowding at Mumbai’s Andheri Station. The exit towards Andheri East would allow commuters arriving on Platform 9 to get off from either side of the train and exit towards Andheri East Road. This new system will reduce the need to use the station’s existing circulation areas.
Reportedly, the decision is being taken to minimise crowding at the station, which sometimes causes passengers from arriving trains to spill onto foot overbridges (FOBs) and staircases. The station handles more than 1,000 suburban train movements and sees around 4.5 lakh passengers every day. Moreover, the new exit will also help enhance overall passenger safety, especially during peak hours.

More Infrastructure Upgrades Planned At Station
Not just a 12-car exit, but several other infrastructure works are also underway to improve train operations at Andheri Station in Mumbai. According to Mid-Day, Platforms 4 and 5 are being extended towards the south to facilitate the reversal of trains from Platform 5 towards Virar. A new signal at the northern end of Platform 7 is being planned. It will facilitate the reversal of up-through trains to the down-through line.
The authorities are also planning an emergency crossover between the up and down Harbour lines at the northern end. This will allow Harbour Line trains to be reversed during emergencies or jumbo blocks, while maintaining other services.
