Mumbai Coastal Road Tunnel Temporarily Shut After Moving Car Catches Fire Inside Tunnel

In Mumbai, traffic has always been a headache, which is why tunnels were built to make travel faster and more convenient. However, commuters in the Mumbai Coastal Road tunnel recently had a frightening experience when a car caught fire inside it. Following the incident, authorities temporarily shut down the Coastal Road tunnel. Read on to know more!

Moving Car Catches Fire Inside Mumbai’s Coastal Road Tunnel

There are several videos online showing how people were running inside the Coastal Road tunnel. On July 15, a moving car caught fire inside the Mumbai Coastal Road tunnel on the Haji Ali–Worli carriageway. The incident triggered panic among commuters and caused major traffic disruption. As per Mid-Day, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) received a call about the incident at around 12.25 PM. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

Soon after, fire brigade teams, police personnel, and a 108 ambulance reached the spot. Meanwhile, commuters panicked and ran towards the tunnel exit to get to safety. Long queues of vehicles formed inside the tunnel as traffic movement came to a halt.

Tunnel Temporarily Shut Down After Fire

Viren Shah, President of the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association, witnessed the terrifying incident himself. He saw the car engulfed in flames, and the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Following the incident, authorities temporarily shut the affected stretch of the Mumbai Coastal Road. The closure led to heavy traffic congestion across several parts of South Mumbai. Authorities have advised motorists to expect slower traffic movement and use alternate routes until normal operations resume.
