Indian Railways is working hard to upgrade Mumbai and its railway infrastructure. The Union Cabinet has now approved the construction of the third and fourth railway lines between Badlapur and Karjat, a section that forms part of the Mumbai suburban corridor. This aims to improve connectivity and ease congestion. Work on the Ghatkopar station upgrade is also moving ahead steadily for smoother passenger movement. Here’s more on both these major projects!
Mumbai Railways Gets A Boost With A New Project
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the 32 km Badlapur-Karjat third and fourth line project. As per a report by Mid-Day, the addition of these two lines will improve connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and meet the rising passenger demand. Reportedly, work on the much-anticipated Kalyan-Badlapur third and fourth line project is already underway. It is 21% completed, and officials expect full completion by December 2026.
This newly approved corridor will now extend the network from Badlapur to Karjat, a key section of the Mumbai suburban corridor. The 32.460 km Badlapur-Karjat brownfield project will ease congestion along the Mumbai-Pune-Solapur-Wadi-Chennai corridor. It will also help create dedicated corridors for suburban and long-distance trains. According to a report by The Indian Express, the Badlapur-Karjat project costs ₹1,324 crore and will be executed on a 50-50 cost-sharing basis between Indian Railways and the Government of Maharashtra.

Ghatkopar Station Upgrade Moves Ahead
Apart from the newly approved Badlapur-Karjat project, the Ghatkopar Station Project is also moving ahead smoothly. As per a report by Mid-Day, structural work on the elevated deck and the three major east-west bridges is progressing steadily under Phase II. Authorities aim to make this station similar to Borivali and Andheri.
The upgrades aim to ease congestion and improve passenger movement in a station that sees heavy footfall. The plan includes a new elevated deck and two 12-metre-wide foot overbridges at the north and south ends. Authorities are also adding more passenger amenities. Ghatkopar is an important junction and is integrated with the Mumbai Metro Line 1. It handles an average of around four lakh commuters daily.
