Madh-versova bridge

The much-awaited Madh-Versova bridge project in Mumbai is now expected to begin soon. The bridge, which has been in the pipeline for years, will cut travel time between Madh and Versova from 90 minutes to just five minutes. Here’s everything you need to know about this upcoming bridge.

Madh-Versova Bridge To Become A Reality After Decades

After so many years of waiting, Mumbai’s Madh-Versova bridge is all set to become a reality. Originally proposed in the 1967 development plan, the construction work is now expected to begin within two months. According to a report by The Free Press Journal, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is awaiting final confirmation from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Bombay High Court. Once all clearances are granted, the officials will start the work. An X user, @Amarrrrz, also posted an update regarding the upcoming construction on their social media account.

Once completed, the bridge will drastically cut travel time between Madh and Versova in Mumbai. It currently takes around 90 minutes to cover the 22 km distance between the two locations. The new bridge will reduce it to just 1.5 km and five minutes of travel. Reportedly, the bridge will be a 2.06 km cable-stayed structure. It will be built across the Versova creek and will be 27.5 metres wide. It will also feature four lanes connecting Amarnath Road near Versova Koliwada to Madh Jetty.

The Project Costs Around ₹3990 Crores

As per The Free Press Journal, the Madh-Versova bridge project costs around ₹3,990 crore. The project was awarded on August 29, 2024. The cost includes construction, three years of maintenance, casting yard rental, and cost fluctuation provisions. The bridge is expected to be completed within three years from the start of construction.

However, the BMC is still awaiting final approvals for the diversion of 2.75 hectares of mangrove land required for the project. In exchange, three hectares of alternative land have been identified. For every tree cut, three new saplings will be planted. Once these clearances are received, the authorities will seek High Court approval and begin construction within two months.

Currently, there is no direct road link between Madh and Versova. Commuters rely on ferry services, which remain suspended for around four months during the monsoon, causing significant inconvenience. The new bridge is expected to eliminate this problem and ease travel for thousands of daily commuters.
