Mumbai is experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures rising to levels that make it difficult for residents to step out, especially during the afternoon. The city is feeling the heat much earlier than expected this March. Temperatures shot up sharply at the start of the week, leaving many people struggling with the unusually hot weather.
Mumbai Experiences Hot Weather
At the start of the week, the temperature in Mumbai rose sharply. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 40°C on Tuesday. This is 7.6°C above the normal level for this time of year. As per The Times of India, it is also the highest maximum temperature recorded in the city in the last five years.
Meanwhile, the IMD’s Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 35.4°C, which was 4.3°C above normal for this time of the year. Weather officials warned that the heat could intensify in certain areas. Because of the rising temperatures, the IMD issued an orange alert on Tuesday for Mumbai and the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This alert covered Thane and Palghar as well.

Why March Is So Hot In Mumbai?
Many people in Mumbai are wondering why the city is already witnessing such intense heat in early March. As per NDTV, meteorologists explain that dry winds and weaker sea breezes are one of the key reasons behind the heat. Coastal cities like Mumbai usually receive cooling from sea breezes coming from the Arabian Sea. However, this natural cooling has weakened in recent days, allowing temperatures to rise quickly during the day. According to weather observers, an anticyclonic system currently active over Gujarat and nearby regions is playing a major role in this situation.
However, some relief is expected soon. According to the IMD, the impact of the anticyclone is likely to weaken from Wednesday. As this happens, maximum temperatures over the North Konkan region may start falling gradually.
Make sure you take the necessary safety precautions to keep yourself safe from this heat!
