Maharashtra Approves Mumbai Metro Line 5 Expansion

According to Hindustan Times, the state government has approved the expansion of Mumbai Metro Line 5, along with its newly proposed extension, Line 5A. The development is expected to improve regional connectivity across the rapidly growing Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The combined corridor, spanning 34.2 km, is estimated to cost ₹18,130.55 crore. Mumbai Metro Line 5 was initially approved in October 2017 as a 24.9-km fully elevated route with 17 stations linking Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan, at a cost of ₹8,416.51 crore.

The project is now being executed in two phases. The first phase, an 11.9-km stretch between Thane and Bhiwandi with six stations, is in its final stages of construction. Progress on this section has been relatively fast, as it did not face significant rehabilitation and resettlement hurdles. However, the Bhiwandi to Kalyan phase, the 10.475-km stretch with six stations, saw multiple delays due to encroachments and large-scale demolitions.

According to a Mid-Day report, Mumbai Metro Line 5 and its proposed extension, Line 5A, will link key urban hubs across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The first phase will run from Kapurbawdi to Dhamankar Naka, while Phase 2 will extend the route from Dhamankar Naka to Durgadi. The proposed Line 5A will further expand connectivity by linking Durgadi with Kalyan and Ulhasnagar.

Officials estimate that the corridor will benefit nearly 6.9 million residents across Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar. Once operational, the metro line is also expected to cut travel time by around 40–50%.
