With 7M Daily Riders, Affordable Fares & Vast Network–Is Delhi Metro One Of The World’s Best?

Since its launch, Delhi Metro has made public transport more accessible, efficient, and reliable for millions of commuters in the city. So, when students from Tetr College of Business (Cohort of 2029) engaged with the system during their immersive India term, they came away with some interesting insights, highlighting that the Delhi Metro doesn’t get its due credit and could well be one of the best metro networks in the world.

Is Delhi Metro The Best Metro Network In The World?

With a network spanning over 416 kilometres, the Delhi Metro is India’s largest metro system. It carries around 6–7 million commuters daily across nearly 300 stations and multiple lines, making it one of the most widely used public transport systems in the world.

Students from Tetr College of Business recently studied the Delhi Metro as a “system that moves millions” rather than just infrastructure, and shared some insightful observations.“The Delhi Metro isn’t just infrastructure. It’s a reflection of how a city moves together,” the college wrote in an Instagram post.

Echoing this, a student described it as “one of the best metro systems in the world” that doesn’t get enough credit. They also called it an “engineering marvel,” highlighting how its 12 functional lines and extensive network help millions, like daily wage workers, students, office-goers, and more, reach their destinations every day.

Here’s Why The City’s Metro Network Stands Out

As part of their hands-on approach to learning business in real-world settings, these students engaged closely with the city’s transport ecosystem. So, naturally, they asked—why do so many people rely on the metro? The answer is simple, it’s affordable! Commuters can travel across lines for a maximum fare of ₹60, which is way less than a dollar.

Despite the massive footfall, complaints are relatively limited. The students summed it up well: “If it’s not affordable, if it’s not accessible, it’s not public transport.”

So, does this make the Delhi Metro the best in the world? Well, that’s debatable, but it is undoubtedly best designed for the scale it operates at. As the post puts it, “It’s not perfect. It’s crowded. It’s chaotic. And, maybe that’s the point. Because public transport isn’t about comfort. It’s about access.”
