There are London landmarks you visit for the architecture, and then there are the ones that make you hear a Shah Rukh Khan soundtrack in your head. All Saints’ Church in Blackheath falls firmly into the latter category. With its towering spire rising above an expanse of open grassland, this historic church is associated with the London sequences of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Chopra’s 2012 romantic drama starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

All Saints’ Church Blackheath: The Landmark From Jab Tak Hai Jaan

The film follows Samar Anand, an Indian bomb disposal expert whose life becomes intertwined with Meera Thapar. Their first encounter is associated with the church, making the location particularly special for fans who remember Samar and Meera’s complicated love story. The church’s surroundings also featured in the film’s wintry London setting, created using artificial snow.

Long before Bollywood brought its romance to Blackheath, All Saints’ Church had established itself as a neighbourhood landmark. Architect Benjamin Ferrey designed the church to serve Blackheath’s growing population during the Victorian era. The Earl of Dartmouth donated the land and laid the foundation stone on 26 October 1857. The church was consecrated on 1 November 1858, although further construction continued into the following decade.

Its Gothic Revival architecture is hard to miss. Built using Kentish ragstone, the church features pointed architectural details and an imposing spire that dominates the surrounding landscape. Later additions included a vestry in 1890 and a porch in 1899, designed by architect Arthur Blomfield. Its Grade II listed status recognises its architectural and historical significance.

There is a musical chapter to its history, too. Sir Arthur Sullivan and Gustav Holst brought choirs to the church, while composer Alfred Cellier served as its organist between 1862 and 1866. Inside, visitors can discover decorative mosaics and memorials that reflect the church’s religious and community heritage.

Make A Day Of It At Blackheath

The church sits beside Blackheath common, where wide-open grassland offers a refreshing change from London’s crowded streets. Blackheath Village is close enough for a café stop, a wander through independent shops or a leisurely afternoon outdoors. Greenwich, with its historic attractions and expansive park, can easily round off the outing.

For Jab Tak Hai Jaan fans, though, the real appeal is standing in a place connected to one of Bollywood’s memorable romances. All Saints’ is an active church, so visitors should respect services and check access arrangements before entering. The surrounding public heath offers plenty of opportunities to admire the building from outside.
