Apple’s Diwali campaign, titled ‘Step Into the Light’, created in collaboration with the Indian luxury fashion label Raw Mango, is going viral online. The ad features a folk-inspired rendition of the 1990s song ‘Roop Suhana Lagta Hai’ and a special appearance by actress Juhi Chawla. The advertisement is going viral not just for its creativity and beautiful visuals but also for the historical place where it was shot.

Apparently, the makers chose the 19th-century Tijara Fort as the shooting location for the ad. But do you know about the history of this restored fort? Tijara Fort, or Tijara Fort Palace, is built on a hill in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, India. According to Remote Lands, the fort remained in ruins for over a hundred years, but today, it stands as one of the best high-end weekend getaways from New Delhi.

It was conceptualised by the King of Alwar, Bakhtawar Singh. However, its construction began in 1835 under his son, Maharaja Balwant Singh. After his demise in 1845, construction stopped completely. Because of this, the fort remained empty and half-built for over 150 years.

From Ruins To A Luxury Hotel

According to Remote Lands, over the years, this royal place also became a hiding place for criminals. But once in a while, an adventurous soul would venture in and climb the fort to enjoy the panoramic views. But yes, it was not a place that families could visit.

Fortunately, about a decade ago, the Neemrana Group of Hotels took over the ruins on a lease from the government and made the fort not just habitable but luxurious. It opened its gates to guests in January 2016, and the rest is history.

Maharaja Balwant Singh originally used architects from Kabul and Delhi, which is why Tijara Fort has a distinct Afghan-Indo style with hints of colonial architecture. Inside, people can see stonework with ornate designs, open areas for gardens and large living spaces. Today, every single one of its 110 rooms has been uniquely designed and styled by famous Indian artists and painters.
