Mumbai Monorail To Resume Services By September End
According to a report by the Free Press Journal, the authority is planning to launch the new travelator-equipped skywalk alongside the reopening of Monorail services to boost connections between different modes of public transport. The 19.54-km Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk-Chembur Monorail corridor has been shut for several months while undergoing significant safety and technology upgrades. Work on the Mahalaxmi skywalk is likely to be completed by September-end, after which Monorail services could restart.
However, MMRDA has not given an official reopening date yet. Trial runs are now being conducted along the corridor, while final station and system-related works are being completed. The reopening of the Monorail along with the Mahalaxmi facility could improve connections between the Monorail, Metro Line 3 and the Western Railway suburban network.

Monorail To Get Major Upgradation
According to reports, the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project is around 90% complete and will create a direct pedestrian link between Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail station, Metro Line 3, and Mahalaxmi railway station. The nearly 283-metre-long and 11-metre-wide skywalk will include six travelators with a combined length of 176 metres, as well as two passenger lifts.
Designed to take in approximately 4,500 passengers per hour, the facility is planned to cut transfer time between the three transport systems by nearly 20 minutes. It is being designed as India’s first travelator-equipped skywalk and could make Monorail services more convenient for commuters travelling from South Mumbai and Worli.
During the shutdown, the Monorail underwent a major modernisation programme. This includes the installation of Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling, induction of 10 new Made-in-India rakes and refurbishment of the existing fleet.

The upgraded signalling system allows for continuous communication between trains and the control centre, allowing train movements to be monitored more closely and improving operational safety. While mandatory safety procedures for the upgraded signalling system have been completed, MMRDA is carrying out final works before passenger services can restart.
