The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has submitted a proposal to the central government for the construction of Metro Line 11. This new underground metro line in Mumbai will connect Anik Depot in Sion to the Gateway of India, covering a stretch of 17.4 kilometres. Estimated to cost around ₹23,487 crore, the project will also extend the ongoing Metro Line 4 (Wadala–Thane–Kasarvadavali) being developed by the MMRDA, further improving city-wide connectivity, as per Free Press Journal.

Upon completion, Metro Line 11 will become Mumbai’s second fully underground metro line. The new line will connect some of Mumbai’s most populated and historic areas like Wadala, Byculla, Nagpada, Bhendi Bazaar, Crawford Market, Horniman Circle, and CSMT, before terminating at the Gateway of India

As per media reports, MMRCL has almost finished designing the route and is sorting financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for this underground metro line. Once the central government reviews the project’s financial and technical details, final approval is expected soon. The Anik Depot in Sion will act as the main car depot for the new line. It will also include a multi-level parking hub connected to BEST buses.

According to Free Press Journal, the metro will also have an interchange station at Wadala, for commuters to travel between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs. During Diwali, MMRCL invited tenders to appoint a consultant to finalise the station layout, design tunnels, plan civil works, and manage traffic flow during construction. The Maharashtra government has already approved the project. It will require about 22.7 hectares of land, most of which belongs to the government.
