The new Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) project includes the construction of an elevated road. This upcoming Eastern Express Highway stretch will link Ghatkopar to Thane’s Anand Nagar. As part of this project, over 700 trees, including pink trumpets or Tabebuia rosea trees, along Vikhroli will likely be felled. Here’s more on it.
706 Trees In Mumbai To Be Felled To Make Way For A Highway Project

As per a report by The Indian Express, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued notices on nearly 706 trees along the Eastern Express Highway. Pink trumpets, which line the Vikhroli stretch, are India’s answer to Japan’s cherry blossoms. The trees which bloom in winter are a major attraction point for commuters thanks to their distinct pink hues.
BMC’s notices on the 706 trees have invited suggestions and objections from citizens on this tree-cutting proposal until October 16. Out of the 706 trees, over 315 trees will most likely be felled, while the remaining will be transplanted. The Eastern Express Highway will stretch 12.95 km as the MMRDA has commenced work on the construction of an elevated corridor between Cheddha Nagar in Ghatkopar and Anand Nagar in Thane.
Pink Trumpet Trees To Also Be Affected
Officials reveal to The Indian Express that 706 trees have been identified for felling along the alignment of the MMRDA project. The earmarked trees are located in three wards, namely N ward in Ghatkopar, S ward in Bhandup, Vikhroli, and T ward in Mulund. Moreover, officials confirmed that pink trumpet trees aka Tabebuia rosea trees, will also be impacted.
Currently, BMC is inviting both suggestions and objections from citizens to plan the transplantation of the 700 trees. Senior officials will hear the responses on October 16.
