Good news for Mumbaikars! You might soon be able to book local train tickets directly through WhatsApp. Indian Railways is exploring chat-based ticket booking options to make the process more convenient for passengers of Mumbai locals. Here’s more on it.
WhatsApp Ticket Booking For Mumbai Locals May Soon Roll Out
The Indian Railways is now considering a plan that would let passengers book Mumbai local train tickets through WhatsApp. As per a report by The Free Press Journal, the move aims to make ticketing quicker and more convenient for everyday commuters. The idea came up in a recent meeting and, once details are finalised, a tender process will follow.
If this initiative rolls out, the booking process for local trains could become far smoother. In accordance with the Digital India initiative, Indian Railways is trying to shift the entire ticketing system online. Cashless digital tickets would make the process not just quicker, but also more accessible for passengers.

Metro Users Already Booking Tickets Digitally
As per a report by The Free Press Journal, only 25% of passengers currently use digital ticketing methods, but the numbers are growing. The Railways is now working on a chat-based booking system, similar to what many Mumbai metro users already use.
The process is simple. A passenger scans a QR code, a WhatsApp chat opens, and they send a “Hi” message. From there, a menu pops up with booking options, letting them complete the entire process through the WhatsApp chat. Easy, right?
Railway authorities are now trying to build a similar system for local trains. But there are some challenges, especially concerns around misuse via the existing UTS app. So, the aim is to build something much more secure. Reportedly, Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railways, also stated that the authorities are exploring other alternatives to make this plan work.
