Many infrastructure projects are currently in progress in Mumbai, including several projects aimed at improving the city’s water supply. One such project is the Gargai Dam in Palghar. However, the project has now faced a delay, with construction pushed to next year. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest update.
Why Gargai Dam Project In Mumbai Delayed?
The Gargai Dam project was expected to begin in October 2026, but it has now been pushed to January 2027. According to BMC plans, the Gargai Dam will be built in Wada tehsil of Palghar district. It is around 110 km from Mumbai.
According to Mid Day report, once the project is completed, the dam will supply 440 million litres of water to Mumbai every day. It will help address one of the major water-related problems in the city. However, the project has been delayed because two approvals are still pending.
It needs permission from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and approval from the National Board for Wildlife. The approvals are needed because the project will submerge around 3,10,140 trees. It will also include transplanting these trees and rehabilitating residents and landowners affected by the construction.

What Is The Progress Of The Project?
BMC officials are working to get the pending permissions so that construction can begin by January. As per Mid Day report, once the approvals come through, the BMC will start rehabilitating affected landowners and transplanting trees. Meanwhile, soil testing, project design and planning are already underway. Officials also said that the availability of alternative land is no longer an issue.
The project has a total budget of ₹5,000 crore, including construction and other related work. The dam construction cost is around ₹3,100 crore. The BMC aims to complete the dam and the tunnel connecting it to Modak Sagar reservoir by 2028.
