Gaiety Galaxy, one of the most famous and iconic cinema complexes in Bandra West, Mumbai, was temporarily shut down by the Mumbai Police, and all further shows were cancelled at this theatre. The decision has left many movie-goers in the area clearly disappointed. Here’s what we know about this.
Iconic Gaiety Galaxy Theatre In Mumbai Temporarily Closed
Founded in November 1972 by Manoj Desai, the Gaiety Galaxy theatre, or the G7 multiplex, has long been a cultural landmark for Bollywood fans in Bandra West, Mumbai. The iconic cinema complex is known for its affordable ticket prices and for hosting fan celebrations. But according to Hindustan Times, the cinema complex is now temporarily closed by the Mumbai Police.
All the further shows of movies at the theatre were cancelled after the police found that its licence had not been renewed since 2021. A notice was issued on September 6 and was put up outside the premises, effectively halting all movie screenings until the licence issue is resolved.

Cinema Complex Also Had Technical Issues
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bandra) shared with Hindustan Times that the management of Gaiety Galaxy theatre also had technical issues, including burnt electrical cables. This issue could pose a serious safety risk to moviegoers. Once the licence is renewed and the fees are paid, the authority will take a decision on whether to allow the theatre to function.
Reportedly, the police have also registered an FIR under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). This FIR deals with issues like disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant. According to News18, the cinema began with just three screens, namely Gaiety, Galaxy and Gemini.
Later, four more screens were added, which were named Glamour, Gem, Gossip and Grace. The complex was one of the favourite destinations for film buffs and Bollywood fans. Now, it remains to be seen whether this iconic theatre will open again or not.
