As per a report by Mid-day, significant progress has been achieved under the Virar-Dahanu Road (VR-DRD) quadrupling project, with capacity augmentation works at Mumbai’s Virar station. According to the project, Virar Station Platform no. 3A and 4A have been widened from 6.50 metres to 10.50 metres and extended to accommodate around 15-coach local trains, against the earlier provision for 12-coach trains. Additionally, a new home, Platform No. 5A, has been built on the western side.

The construction has been completed in four months, showcasing efficient execution despite operational constraints at this high-density suburban station. According to the news portal CMD, MRVC, Shri Vilas S. Wadekar stated that the augmentation works at Virar Station are an important step towards enhancing the capacity of the area. The MRVC continues to execute more such works in the upcoming time in coordination with Western Railway, ensuring safety and minimal disruption to train operations.

All About The Virar Project

Back in December 2025, Western Railway announced that a critical three-month upgrade at Virar station will start by 2026 and will pave the way for operating 15-car trains on the 60-km Virar-Dahanu corridor. As per the Hindustan Times, the project will significantly improve the load on one of Mumbai’s most crowded stations, Virar.

To support the longer trains and journey, Western Railway has sought five additional rakes from ICF, Chennai. It is said that these will be used to convert the existing 12-car services into 15-car local trains, increasing the capacity by 25% on the Virar-Dahanu route.
