FDA Suspends Mumbai’s 60-YO Poornima Restaurant

As per a report by The Indian Express, located in Raja Bahadur Compound near the Bombay Stock Exchange and opposite Bombay House, the renowned Udupi restaurant has been satisfying customers for over six decades and is a favourite among office-goers, lawyers and visitors to South Mumbai.

The decision follows an inspection carried out on July 23 by Food Safety Officer R. S. Suryawanshi, during which authorities found several violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and hygiene regulations that the FDA said could pose serious health risks.

Fungal Raw Vegetables & Contaminated Kitchen

Among the most serious findings was fungal growth on raw vegetables, such as drumsticks used in sambar, and bananas used to prepare the restaurant’s signature banana vada. FDA officials pointed out that fungal contamination in kitchens is particularly concerning, as the acidic nature of idli and dosa batter can increase food safety risks.

The inspection also showed that raw and contaminated ingredients were being stored alongside cooked and frozen food, raising the risk of cross-contamination. The authorities also reported the existence of flies, stagnant water, dirty drains without cockroach traps, and walls and high ceilings with peeling paint and rust.

Additional breaches consisted of the absence of mandatory medical fitness records and periodic health check-ups for food handlers, refrigeration units with incorrectly sealed doors, and the use of non-food-grade plastic barrels to store pickles without the required compliance certification.
