Pune has come out as the district with the highest number of complaints related to unhygienic food in Maharashtra since the state Food and Drug Administration (FDA) set up its online grievance portal, FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said on Saturday. Read on to know more.
Pune Records Highest Complaints In FDA Portal
As per a report by Moneycontrol, addressing a food safety conference organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) in Pune, Tukaram Mundhe stated that the recently inaugurated portal, complaints. mahafda.in has got an overwhelming response from the public.
According to him, the website recorded nearly 10 lakh hits within 24 hours of its launch, with thousands of complaints being filed. Among all districts in the state, Pune recorded the highest number of complaints, the largest number of which were related to unhygienic food served at food establishments.
Tukaram Mundhe reported that the new online system has been developed to improve transparency and accountability in handling food safety issues. Under the standard procedure, the FDA’s Joint Commissioner for the affected region must acknowledge a complaint within 24 hours and transfer it to an officer for investigation. If no action is taken within the prescribed time, the complaint will automatically be escalated to a senior official.

FSSAI Laid New Key Food Regulations
As per the news portal, the FDA head also urged hotels, restaurants and other food businesses to fully comply with food safety management systems and adhere to the 22 key standards laid down by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The state has stepped up inspections of hotels, restaurants and roadside eateries since Tukaram took charge as FDA Commissioner in May. In recent weeks, the department has taken action against several food establishments over hygiene violations.
Among the major actions, the FDA suspended the food business licence of Mumbai’s Parsi Dairy Farm after inspectors found serious lapses in food safety and hygiene standards. The department also suspended the licence of a canteen operating at Mumbai’s KEM Hospital, directing it to halt operations over similar violations.

Looking ahead, Mundhe stated the FDA is exploring the use of blockchain technology to maintain a transparent and tamper-proof record of food businesses that have faced regulatory action in the past.
