A luxury home in Mumbai has become the centre of an online debate after a real estate broker claimed that prospective buyers who consume non-vegetarian food would not be allowed to purchase the property. The apartment, reportedly priced at around ₹6.3–6.5 crore, is located in a prime locality of Mumbai’s Tardeo area.

The controversy started after real estate agent Bhavesh Kaware, who uses the name “propertytransactionguru” online, shared a video showing off the under-construction 2BHK apartment. The property reportedly provides around 900 sq ft of carpet area, a sea-facing view, a balcony and podium parking.
While describing the apartment, Kaware stated that the property was meant exclusively for “pure vegetarians” and that people who eat non-vegetarian food would not be eligible to buy a flat there. The statement quickly drew attention on social media, with several users questioning whether food habits should play a role in deciding who can buy a home.

How Did Social Media React To It?
As per a report by Times Now, some critics have defined the alleged condition as discriminatory, arguing that dietary choices should not determine a person’s access to housing. The controversy has also reignited discussions around the long-standing practice of vegetarian-only housing in Mumbai, particularly in certain parts of South Mumbai and the western suburbs.
While some housing societies and residential projects in the city have already faced allegations of preferring vegetarian residents, questions remain over the latest claim. It is currently unclear whether the alleged restriction is an official condition imposed by the developer or housing society or whether it was simply a statement made by the broker as part of his property marketing.
The problem has also prompted a wider cultural debate online. Social media users have questioned whether such restrictions could significantly affect communities where fish and meat form an important part of traditional diets, including sections of Mumbai’s Marathi and Koli communities.
