Pink Report By redBus Highlights Rise In Women’s Bus Travel
The world’s largest online bus ticketing platform, redBus, has released some interesting insights from its first-of-its-kind redBus Pink Report. The report, released during International Women’s Week, sheds light on how Indian women are travelling across the country.
You might be surprised to know that women’s bus travel has surged by 136% since 2019, which is nearly double the pace of overall passenger growth at 72%. Not just that, Indian women now make up one in three intercity bus travellers at 33%.
Most of this momentum is driven by Gen Z travellers, who are preferring solo journeys and travelling more across Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns. This shows that women are leaning towards greater independence, participation and mobility across India. South India continues to lead women’s bus travel participation. The numbers have increased from 24% in 2019 to 34% in 2025.
Solo Trips And Long-Distance Bus Travel Among Women
Wait, there’s more. The report highlights several other insights about women bus travellers. The number of solo women travellers and women undertaking long-distance journeys above 500 km has also increased.
Some of the top states Indian women prefer travelling to include:
- Assam
- Kerala
- Andhra Pradesh
- Punjab
- Telangana
Most of these travellers belong to Gen Z (14-19 years). They make up 60% of all women passengers and account for 68% of solo women’s trips. The report also highlights how women plan before booking their bus tickets:
- 68% of women bus travellers originate from Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns
- 62% of women book their tickets one or more days before travel
- 47% prefer buses, highly rated by other women passengers
- 33% check how many women have already booked seats on the bus
Prakash Sangam, CEO of redBus, said, “Women’s travel in India today reflects
more than just rising journeys; it signals a growing sense of independence. More women across India are choosing to travel on their own terms, for work, education, opportunity or leisure. At redBus, we are continuously strengthening features that build trust, from better visibility of bus ratings by women, to enhanced safety information and dedicated support systems.”
