In a major rescue operation called ‘Operation Himrahat’, the army successfully rescued 46 stranded tourists and facilitated the safe movement of over 150 vehicles in East Sikkim. The civilians were trapped in the high-altitude areas of the region after it received heavy snowfall. Here’s how the army managed to pull this off.

According to a report by News18, Operation Himrahat was launched on February 22, 2026. The Indian Army assisted locals and tourists stranded in sub-zero temperatures during heavy snowfall in East Sikkim. The update was also posted on X by @trishakticorps. According to the post, officials successfully rescued 46 tourists and shifted them to the nearest Army camp. Teams also provided medical care, essential relief, warm shelter and hot meals.

Apart from this, the operation enabled the safe and orderly movement of over 150 tourist vehicles to secure locations. Their prompt action ensured that every civilian stayed safe and warm. Reportedly, medical teams present on the spot ensured that all rescued individuals were stable and cared for.

Operation Himrahat in East Sikkim is one such example that the Indian Army can go to any length to ensure citizens remain safe. According to a report by DD News, the army also regulated traffic movement in the difficult terrain. Despite the challenging situation, high-altitude conditions and freezing temperatures, the army personnel remained fully prepared and responsive throughout. According to DD News, the rescue operation highlights the Indian Army’s commitment to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR), especially in remote and difficult terrains.
