Piyush Pandey, one of India’s most celebrated advertising icons and the creative force behind some of the country’s most memorable campaigns, passed away on Thursday. He was only 70. His work shaped the landscape of Indian advertising, blending creativity with a uniquely Indian sensibility that resonated with millions.
Piyush Pandey, A Legend Of Indian Advertising, Passes Away
On October 23, Piyush Pandey bid farewell to the world. He was the brother of veteran singer Ila Arun and film director Prasoon Pandey. The advertising legend was 70. According to Republic World, he was the Chief Creative Officer Worldwide and Executive Chairman India of Ogilvy, a media agency.
Born in 1955 in Jaipur, he was one of the nine siblings and got his Post Graduate in History from St Stephen’s College, Delhi. He stepped into the advertising industry in 1982 and wrote the ad for Sunlight Detergent. He stood out for bringing a distinct Indian touch to the industry, and was often called the architect of Indian advertising. He received the Padma Shri award in 2016 for his immense contribution to the industry.

In a career spanning almost 40 years, Piyush Pandey gave India some of the most memorable campaigns that people still remember. From Luna moped and Fevicol to Cadbury’s ‘kuch Khaas Hai’ campaign, his work made people realise the impact of advertising.
Remember Vodafone’s Pug and ZooZoos ads, Asian Paint’s ‘Har Ghar Kuch kehta Hai’, and nationwide polio ad campaign with Amitabh Bachchan? Yes, they were all works of Padma Shri Piyush Pandey! His genius went beyond the realm of the advertising world. He was the lyricist of the patriotic song Mile Sur Mera Tumhara that came out in 1988.
