Good news! An Indian-born cheetah, Mukhi, has given birth to five adorable cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Both the mother and the cubs are healthy. The news has sparked joy among wildlife lovers and marked a major milestone for India’s cheetah reintroduction initiative.
Indian-Born Cheetah Gives Birth To 5 Cubs At Kuno National Park
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav took to X to share the happy news. Mukhi, the first Indian-born female cheetah, has now become the first Indian-born cheetah to reproduce. This is a major milestone for India. It is working really hard to strengthen its cheetah reintroduction initiative.
Mukhi gave birth to five cubs at 33 months of age at the Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh. You would be happy to know that both the mother and her cubs are doing well. CM Dr Mohan Yadav wrote, “This is an unprecedented breakthrough for India’s cheetah reintroduction initiative.” He also called it a “landmark achievement” for Project Cheetah.

A Big Boost For Project Cheetah
This successful reproduction is not just good news but also an important indicator of adaptation, health and long-term prospects for cheetahs in Indian habitats. CM Dr Mohan Yadav also wrote, “This significant step forward strengthens optimism about establishing a self-sustaining and genetically diverse cheetah population in India, further advancing the nation’s conservation goals.”
As per a report by India Today, Project Cheetah was launched in September 2022. It aims to reintroduce cheetahs in India through relocations from Namibia and South Africa. These big cats had been extinct in the country for decades. Mukhi’s five cubs now offer renewed hope for the project’s future.
