It’s good news for Bengaluru to Pune commuters; the proposed greenfield expressway, which is aimed at significantly reducing travel time, is steadily moving towards final approval. Read on to know more about the highway project.
Bengaluru-Pune Highway Project Towards Approval
The project has already received recognition as one of the 25 priority greenfield highways identified across the country, underscoring its national significance. As per a report by News18, the central government is currently in the final stages of approving the project, with the final result likely within the next month. The process of land acquisition will commence immediately upon receiving the green signal, followed by the initiation of construction work. The authorities have already submitted the detailed project report for final review.
According to reports, the journey between Pune and Bengaluru via National Highway 48 takes around 14 to 15 hours due to heavy traffic, narrow stretches, encroachments, and frequent accidents. The new highway is expected to ease connectivity, reduce travel time to seven hours, and offer a faster and more efficient alternative.
The proposed highway will strengthen connectivity between Maharashtra and Karnataka. It will pass through major districts such as Satara and Sangli in Maharashtra before entering Karnataka through Belagavi. Furthermore, it will extend across cities like Bagalkot, Gadag, Vijayanagar, Davanagere, Chitradurga, and Tumkur before reaching Bengaluru.
More About The Pune-Bengaluru Expressway
A proposed ring road at Kanjale-Khopegaon will be integrated with the highway, enhancing regional connectivity. The project is expected to play an important role in boosting the Mumbai-Pune-Bengaluru industrial corridor, enabling smoother movement of goods and strengthening networks between major economic hubs.
The Bengaluru-Pune expressway is a part of the Bharatmala Project and will span approximately 700 kilometres. The project is planned as a six-lane highway, expandable to eight lanes in select stretches. The estimated cost of the project ranges between ₹45,000 crore and ₹50,000 crore, and it will need around 20,000 acres of land.
Once finished, the highway is expected to enhance growth and connectivity significantly and also improve logistics efficiency. It is also likely to boost trade and generate employment opportunities. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is currently reviewing the project, highlighting its significance in the country’s infrastructure expansion plans.
