Raksha Bandhan may traditionally be about tying a sacred thread and reminiscing over shared memories with a box of mithai, but this year, the humble rakhi got a serious upgrade. From 24KT gold coin rakhis and intricate sterling silver designs to smartwatches and luxury hampers, Indians are embracing a more premium way to celebrate the sibling bond. Scroll on to see how Rakhi 2026 turned tradition into a celebration of style, sentiment and a little extra sparkle.

Raksha Bandhan 2026: From Thread To Treasure

According to Instamart’s Rakhi Trends 2026, rakhi orders grew nearly 300% year-on-year this year, while demand for premium rakhis jumped 130%. Interestingly, the festive rush peaked at 12:01 PM on August 28, when last-minute shoppers ordered as many as 857 rakhis per minute!

And it wasn’t just rakhis that saw a festive bump. Compared to the week before Raksha Bandhan, chocolates and mithai orders rose by 30% each, while gift hampers climbed 85%. Smartwatch orders nearly doubled, recording a 99% rise, showing how Rakhi gifting is moving beyond the usual sweets-and-thread combination.

One of the biggest trends this Raksha Bandhan was the growing preference for precious metals. Silver and gold-plated rakhis emerged among the most sought-after designs, including convertible pieces that can later be worn as pendants.

Traditional motifs also got a premium makeover, with 925 sterling silver Trishul and Surya designs finding demand. Lumba rakhis, traditionally gifted to sisters-in-law, also saw a spike, with Swarovski-studded designs occupying two of the top three spots in the category.

In Gurgaon, another shopper bought 20 premium silver rakhis for ₹10,780, while a Hyderabad shopper went for an eclectic collection of 109 different threads, including Batman kids’ bands, Swarovski lumbas and traditional Rudrakshas, spending ₹9,790.

But the biggest overall Rakhi hamper came from Gurgaon, where one shopper put together a ₹14,630 mega-cart featuring gold coin rakhis, luxury skincare, artisanal chocolates and plush toys.

In the days leading up to Raksha Bandhan, Hyderabad recorded the highest number of rakhi orders, followed by Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Gurgaon, Noida, Kolkata, Lucknow, Chennai, Bhubaneswar and Vizag.
