Respite From Heat! Mumbai’s 1st AC Local Linking Central & Western Railways May Begin In April

CSMT-Goregaon Local Train

With Mumbai’s summer almost here, there may be some relief in store for commuters on the CSMT-Goregaon route. Railway authorities are considering adding AC coaches on this corridor to meet the growing travel demand. The move could offer much-needed respite from the scorching heat for daily commuters, and here’s all you need to know.

CSMT-Goregaon Route To Get AC Coaches Soon?

According to the Hindustan Times, Mumbai may soon have air-conditioned local trains connecting the Central and Western railways in the city. The AC coaches are expected to be introduced on the CSMT-Goregaon route in April, when the new railway timetable comes into effect.

As of now, AC locals operate on the Central Railway, Harbour Line, and Western Railway routes in Mumbai. However, there are currently no AC trains running along the CSMT-Goregaon corridor of the Harbour line, something Central Railway (CR) authorities are now working to change.

CR is currently awaiting new AC rakes that are expected to run on the CSMT-Goregaon route. This route sees over 100 train services daily, and AC coaches will help ease the commute for travellers. While talking to HT, officials said a proposal is being prepared to replace a few non-AC services on the Mumbai Harbour Line to meet the growing passenger demand. However, it is to be noted that the plan is yet to receive official approval.

Here’s All You Need To Know About This

Once both the Railway lines approve this proposal, new AC locals will be part of the timetable effective April 1. However, there will be some challenges. Railway sources said that although around 300,000 to 500,000 commuters travel on the CSMT-Goregaon local train route daily, approving AC locals could be challenging. Each AC rake can operate only 12–14 services a day, which may create wider gaps between trains on the route.
