According to The Economic Times, South Africa has rolled out an ETA system for Indian travellers, allowing them to apply for a visa online and receive approval in as little as 24 to 48 hours. The new ETA system is valid for trips of up to 90 days and replaces the traditional visa process with a completely online application. Instead of a physical visa sticker, the travel authorisation is digitally linked to the traveller’s passport and allows multiple entries during its validity.
For now, the ETA is available only for travellers arriving through Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and Lanseria International Airport. South Africa has said the system will be gradually expanded to more ports of entry.
While the ETA serves as a digital travel authorisation, the final decision to allow entry rests with immigration officials at the border. Travellers are also advised to check their eligibility and apply through the official South African Department of Home Affairs ETA portal well before their departure.
