Highway commuters and railway tourists passing through Cherthala could soon get a one-stop travel hub, as Southern Railway is planning to set up its first premium travel lounge under the Thiruvananthapuram division at Cherthala railway station. Want to know more about it? Read on!

Cherthala Railway Station To Get Premium Travel Lounge

According to a report by the Indian Express, tenders for the project are expected to be invited soon. The standard station will be developed on more than 7,000 sq ft of railway land and will be open to both railway travellers and the general public. The proposed lounge will be designed to meet the needs of both road and rail tourists. The premium lounge will also feature amenities including a mini cafeteria, mini mart, EV charging station, minor vehicle servicing unit, sleeping pods and a designated parking area.

Officials told the portal that Cherthala was selected because smaller stations often do not have the amenities available at major railway hubs. Unlike conventional station lounges, the facility is being planned as an all-inclusive travel stop where travellers can rest, recharge and utilise essential services during their journey. A senior official told the portal that the concept is all-inclusive, which will meet almost every travel requirement and will make the experience unique.

Southern Railway To Build Food Street

Apart from the premium lounge, Southern Railway is also making plans to develop a food street by utilising available railway land at Cherthala station. The project aims to boost passenger convenience while producing additional non-fare revenue for the Railways.

Officials believe the travel lounge will particularly benefit long-distance highway commuters travelling through Cherthala, where such facilities are currently limited.

Southern Railway already operates an executive lounge at Chennai Central, which has received a positive response from passengers. However, the proposed Cherthala facility is expected to offer a wider range of amenities, creating a comprehensive travel stop for both highway users and rail passengers.
