Statue Of Unity Sculptor Ram Sutar Passes Away At 100; PM Modi Pays Tribute

It is a very sad day for India. Legendary sculptor Ram Sutar, known for designing the Statue of Unity in Gujarat and for bringing global recognition to Indian sculpture, has passed away at the age of 100. He breathed his last at his Noida home on Wednesday night. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to X to pay tribute to the icon.

Legendary Sculptor Ram Sutar Passes Away

According to a report by Live Mint, Ram V Sutar passed away at his Noida residence on Wednesday night. He was the creative force behind the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the tallest statue in the world. Reportedly, he had been dealing with age-related health issues for some time. His son, Anil Sutar, confirmed the news.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the passing of the legendary sculptor. Taking to his official X account, he called Ram Sutar a remarkable artist whose mastery gave India some of its most iconic landmarks, including the Statue of Unity in Kevadia. PM Modi also wrote, “His works will always be admired as powerful expressions of India’s history, culture and collective spirit. He has immortalised national pride for generations to come. His works will keep inspiring artists and citizens alike. My heartfelt condolences to his family, admirers and all who were touched by his remarkable life and work. Om Shanti.”

A Legacy That Will Live On

Not just PM Modi, many others also mourned his loss. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also took to his X account and wrote, “The news of the passing of senior sculptor Maharashtra Bhushan, Dr Ram Sutar, is extremely heartbreaking. I called his son Anil Sutar to express my condolences and offer him solace.”

Ram Sutar was widely known for his mastery of bronze and stone. He earned worldwide respect for his work. Among his many iconic works are the 45-foot-tall Chambal monument and the seated statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Parliament of India. He also designed the 108-foot-tall Kempegowda statue at Bengaluru International Airport. In 1999, Ram Sutar received the Padma Shri. In 2016, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
