“Tathāstu,” Chef Vikas Khanna Recalls His Biji’s Words & How He Went On To Host 4 US Presidents

It’s a fact universally acknowledged that when a child chooses a path that isn’t considered “conventional,” it often comes with a flood of unsolicited advice and the occasional jibes from family. Chef Vikas Khanna was no exception. While choosing his subjects in school, he was encouraged to take the “non-medical” route and become an engineer like his brother, despite having no interest in it. What followed were plenty of jibes, balanced by the unwavering support of his Biji, whose silent prayers played a defining role in his journey to success.

Chef Vikas Khanna took to Instagram to reflect on his journey, one marked by family jibes and the unwavering support of his Biji. Speaking about his faith, he shared his belief that Maa Lakshmi sits upon one’s tongue, making words spoken with truth and conviction come true. He recalled how, back in 1989, while choosing his subjects for high school, he was encouraged by everyone around him to opt for non-medical subjects and pursue engineering.

“My uncle said, “Why is he so adamant about cooking as a profession? What will he become—a bawarchi? Will he work at Amritsar’s famous Crystal restaurant? Or will he cook for the American President?” Without hesitation, my Biji said one word: “Tathāstu” (तथास्तु) — Let it happen.”

With this faith behind him, he went on to pursue non-medical subjects and even got admission into an engineering college, but chose culinary arts, all because of his Biji’s faith. “And becoming the only chef to have hosted four American Presidents happened because of that single word spoken with belief: Tathāstu,” Chef Vikas Khannan shared on this post.

“I hope she is watching from above—quietly smiling, and still making all this magic happen,” his emotional post concluded. He even shared pictures with all the US presidents he hosted, which speaks volumes about his successful journey!
