Thane Gets Prepaid Autos! Maharashtra’s New Service Lets Passengers Know Fares Before Riding

Getting an auto-rickshaw often means waiting and calling out to drivers for 15–20 minutes, and sometimes even longer. That’s not it! Passengers often argue with auto rickshaw drivers over fares, leading to major disputes between the two. So, as a solution, Thane has launched Maharashtra’s first prepaid auto service. Thane Introduces Maharashtra’s First Prepaid Auto Service

To avoid fare disputes, Maharashtra has launched its first prepaid auto service at Thane Railway Station. Apart from reducing disputes, it also aims to manage passenger queues. As per Free Press Journal, the service has been launched by the Late Vasantrao Davkhare Auto-Taxi Driver-Owner Federation, Thane, in collaboration with the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Thane.

At Thane Railway Station, you’ll find a dedicated prepaid rickshaw stand and a commuter help desk. The new prepaid auto service was officially launched during an event held to mark Ravindra Chavan’s birthday. Several people were present at the inauguration, including MLC Adv. Niranjan Davkhare, Thane City MLA Sanjay Kelkar, Thane RTO officials, Rickshaw Union President Maruti Sawant, union members, female representatives and many auto-rickshaw drivers.

Why Did Thane Launch This Service?

The prepaid auto service was introduced after nearly two years of efforts to solve problems at Thane Railway Station. At this station, passengers faced poor queues, unclear fares and arguments. Since Maharashtra had no prepaid auto system earlier, the project went through some challenges before finally launching. 

The service uses Cityflo’s technology to calculate fares in a standardised way. Passengers can check the fare on the platform before starting their journey. This helps them know exactly how much they need to pay and avoids fare-related confusion.
