We come bearing some good news! The Maharashtra Transport Department is set to expand the network of pink autos across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) under the Mahila e-Rickshaw Scheme. The initiative aims to improve last-mile connectivity for women commuters, promote women-led entrepreneurship, and encourage eco-friendly transport. Here’s everything you need to know about it.
Pink Autos To Expand Across Mumbai Metropolitan Region
According to News18, the state transport department will identify dedicated routes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to implement the Mahila e-Rickshaw Scheme. The aim is to improve last-mile connectivity without adding to traffic congestion.
Instead of operating on highways or major roads, the low-speed pink autos will primarily ply on internal roads, feeder routes, and connectivity corridors. The aim is to provide seamless last-mile connectivity by linking residential areas with railway stations, metro stations, and bus depots.
According to reports, the Maharashtra Transport Department and the traffic police are jointly identifying suitable routes for the pink autos across Mumbai’s suburbs, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Vasai-Virar, and Kalyan-Dombivli.

Mahila e-Rickshaw Scheme: All You Need To Know
According to Moneycontrol, each pink auto can travel up to 120 km on a single charge, making it ideal for short-distance, last-mile trips within neighbourhoods. While the Transport Department is yet to announce the fare structure, the vehicles are expected to offer an affordable commuting option.
To empower more women and make ownership more accessible, the Maharashtra government has increased its subsidy under the scheme from 20% to 40% of the vehicle’s cost. The remaining amount will be financed through a bank loan and the beneficiary’s own contribution.
Women selected under the scheme will also receive free driving training, assistance in obtaining a commercial driving licence, and support for vehicle maintenance.
As per reports, the scheme will prioritise economically weaker women, widows, divorced women, and those from marginalised communities. Additionally, every pink auto operating in Mumbai suburbs will be equipped with GPS tracking and other safety features.
