Thrissur Pooram Festival In Kerala

This annual festival takes place at the famous Vadakkunnathan Temple. Known as the grandest temple festival of Kerala, this celebration always attracts devotees and tourists from across India and even abroad. In 2026, the festival will be celebrated from April 26 to April 27. The Free Press Journal reported that the Pooram Nakshathram will begin at 08:27 PM on April 26, 2026, and end at 09:18 PM on April 27, 2026.

The festival follows the traditional Malayalam calendar. It is celebrated on the day when the moon rises along with the Pooram star in the month of Medam. Because it is celebrated on such a large scale and attracts huge crowds, many people consider it one of the biggest festivals in Asia and the most popular among all Pooram festivals in India.

What Is The History Of This Festival?

The festival was started in the late 18th century by Sakthan Thampuran, ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin. His idea was simple; bring different temples together for one big, united celebration. And honestly, today it has turned into something much bigger and grander than he imagined.

According to the Free Press Journal, one of the most exciting highlights is Kudamattam. Here, beautifully decorated elephants stand in rows while people swap colourful ornamental umbrellas in perfect rhythm. It’s super vibrant, full of energy, and honestly a treat to watch.

Another not to miss out on highlight is Ilanjithara Melam. It is a traditional music performance where a group of musicians play percussion instruments together. The perfect sync will amaze you. The festival then ends with a massive fireworks display that lights up the entire sky.

And it’s not just about one day. The Thrissur Pooram Exhibition is also a big part of the celebration. It goes on for 40 to 50 days and offers everything from shopping to entertainment and local experiences.
