There has been a significant rise in the number of tigers in Karnataka’s wildlife sanctuaries, including the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. But unfortunately, the land in the state is not enough to support so many tigers. The forest department will now study the carrying capacity of the Bandipur forest. Here’s what we know so far about this latest development.
Karnataka To Study Bandipur Tiger Reserve’s Carrying Capacity
According to a report by The New Indian Express, Karnataka’s Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has made an announcement related to wildlife in the state. He stated that an expert committee will now carry out a study on the carrying capacity of the Bandipur forest, also known as the Bandipur Tiger Reserve. The report will be submitted by experts to the state government.
Reportedly, the tiger count in the region has increased from 12 in 1972 to 150 when a survey was conducted three years ago. Now, the number stands at 175. It is great that the number of tigers is increasing in the country. But apparently, there is not enough forest space in the region to support them.

Rise In Human-Tiger Conflict Near Tiger Reserves
Apart from limited forest space, there has also been a rise in human-tiger conflicts in villages on the fringes of the reserves. This is why the government has stopped safaris at Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagarhole Tiger Reserve. However, the ban was lifted last month. The restriction had hampered not just tourism but also affected many locals who lost their jobs.
According to The Indian Express, the forest department will now submit a report regarding the forest area in Karnataka. Notably, the Bandipur Tiger Reserve has a circumference of 314 km, of which a 100 km stretch is a conflict zone. The forest department has also set up 25 anti-poaching camps that patrol the zone for 14 hours every day.
