Uttar Pradesh Plans A 1575 Km Metro Project With Major Expansions In Lucknow, Kanpur & Agra

Good news for Uttar Pradesh! The authorities are planning to construct a 1575-kilometre metro rail network across the state. The project is expected to be completed by 2047 and will also bring significant expansions in the three existing metro cities: Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra. Uttar Pradesh Unveils 1575 Km New Metro Project

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has big plans for the state. According to a report by The Times of India, the authorities are planning a 1575 km-long metro network across Uttar Pradesh. The project is expected to be complete by 2047. Reportedly, the blueprint was presented at the ‘Viksit Uttar Pradesh for Viksit Bharat@2047’ seminar by UPMRC managing director Sushil Kumar.

This is a major announcement. The authorities are also planning expansion in the three existing metro cities. This includes 225 km in Lucknow, 200 km in Kanpur and 100 km in Agra. Moreover, the project extends to major urban centres. UPMRC is planning 150 km corridors for Noida-Greater Noida, Varanasi and Prayagraj, while districts like Gorakhpur, Ayodhya and Meerut will get 50 km metro networks each.

790 km Targeted For Completion By 2035

According to a report by The Times of India, approximately 790 km of this massive metro rail system is targeted for completion by 2035. Talking about the financial aspects of the project, UP’s share for the initial 525 km expansion is ₹1040 crore annually. The introduction of this new metro system highlights the corporation’s continuous efforts to improve connectivity and efficiency in the state’s transportation network.

The bigger cities of India, like Delhi and Mumbai, have shown that metro transport is one of the best ways to travel across a city. It is not just affordable but also reduces dependence on private vehicles, cutting traffic and congestion. It should be noted that Uttar Pradesh’s existing metros are already setting benchmarks for efficiency in the state.
