One of the most favourite celebrations we all look forward to is Holi, and Rangbhari Ekadashi marks the special beginning of this festival. If you haven’t heard about this, you are in the right place. Here, you will find all the important details, from the correct date to rituals and significance, to help you understand why this day is so special before the colourful Holi celebrations begin.

What Is Rangbhari Ekadashi?

Rangbhari Ekadashi falls during Phalguna Shukla Paksha and is very special for people in Kashi (Varanasi). What do devotees do? As per India Today, on this day, devotees worship the amla or Indian gooseberry tree, which is believed to be dear to Lord Vishnu. While Ekadashi is usually associated with Lord Vishnu, this one also holds special significance for Lord Shiva devotees. The festival is connected to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati returning to Kashi after their wedding.

What are the rituals followed on this day? During the day, devotees wake up early, take a holy bath, and keep a fast. Many people perform Vishnu puja using amla fruit, tulsi leaves, and oil lamps. Some also perform abhishekam and chant mantras like Vishnu Sahasranama. Charity is also encouraged, such as donating food, clothes, or money to those in need.

When Is Rangbhari Ekadashi This Year?

In 2026, Rangbhari Ekadashi will be observed on February 27, 2026. According to India Today, the Ekadashi tithi actually starts at 12:33 am on February 26, 2026, and continues until 10:32 pm on February 27, 2026. However, Hindu fasting traditions follow the Udaya Tithi rule, which means Hindu devotees observe the fast on the day when Ekadashi is present at sunrise. Since Ekadashi is active during sunrise on February 27, devotees will keep the vrat on this day.

Those observing the fast can break it during Parana time on February 28, 2026, between 6:47 am and 9:06 am. Many people get confused about the exact date of Rangbhari Ekadashi, but fasting is decided based on sunrise timing.
