What Is Special About Delhi’s Upcoming Singapore-Style Smart Bus Shelters?

The Delhi government has set up a citywide plan to redevelop bus queue shelters, bus stops and terminals with high-quality infrastructure and commuter-focused facilities. Want to know more about this? Read on!

Delhi To Upgrade Its Bus Shelters

As per a report by The Hindustan Times, the project is estimated to cost more than ₹650 crore. The project aims to improve the current public transport infrastructure and add new shelters in areas where they are currently not available.

According to officials, the Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (DTIDC) has launched a tender to select a project management consultancy firm to design and oversee the redevelopment. The designated agency will also conduct a survey in the national capital to identify locations that need additional bus queue shelters (BQS).

The project is anticipated to cover around 3,575 bus shelters currently maintained by DTIDC. The officials also stated that the estimated project cost will cover maintenance of the upgraded infrastructure for a period of 20 years.

Delhi Bus Shelters To Feature Modern Amenities

As part of the redevelopment project, the new shelters will feature several technology-enabled facilities and passenger amenities. These consist of panic alarm systems, digital advertising panels, LED lighting, weather display systems and provisions for installing solar panels. All shelters will also be equipped with a public information system to provide real-time bus-related information to passengers. Additionally, digital display boards showing bus routes and bus numbers are recommended to improve traveller comfort and accessibility. The government also plans to complete the redevelopment work within six months of the award of the tender.

The move comes after the continuous efforts by the Delhi government to upgrade public transport infrastructure and improve the passengers’ journey in the city. Officials stated that the redevelopment plan follows directions issued during a high-level meeting led by the transport minister in June last year.

As per the news portal, during the meeting, the minister had asked transport department officials to speed up plans for transforming the city’s bus queue shelters into modern facilities. Officials said the department was also advised to examine current bus shelter models in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru and Navi Mumbai, along with worldwide examples from cities such as Singapore and London.

The planned upgrade of bus shelters is expected to align with the city’s broader push to enhance public transport systems and improve last-minute connectivity. As per the officials, the survey element of the project would help evaluate commuter demand and identify underserved areas requiring new shelters.
