What Is Western Railway’s SARAL Initiative? How To Use It To Claim A Refund?

Western Railway SARAL

Mumbai’s suburban commuters, we have some good news for you all! After years of frustrating “money deducted but ticket not booked” moments on apps like UTS and RailOne, there’s finally a proper way to get your grievances addressed. Western Railway has introduced a QR code-based system called Smart Assistance & Refund Access Link (SARAL) to tackle these issues. Scroll on to know everything about this initiative.

What Is SARAL By Western Railway?

According to Hindustan Times, Western Railway launched SARAL, a QR code-based system, on Wednesday, which allows commuters to file complaints and request refunds for failed ticket or pass transactions. Railway officials report that, on average, 8 to 10 commuters daily report such issues at ticket counters across stations.

Currently, nearly 48% of Mumbai’s 30-32 lakh daily suburban commuters rely on digital ticketing. Keeping this in mind, Western Railway believes that SARAL will help commuters track such complaints and reduce uncertainty around refunds. Launched with a tagline, “Yatra Bhi, Refund Bhi Saral,” commuters will be able to file refund claims for any of their failed online transactions via the QR code provided by Western Railway.

All You Need To Know About This Initiative

The SARAL service has been launched by Western Railway on a pilot basis in Mumbai for now. Under this initiative, commuters can scan a QR code at stations to access a ‘Passenger Ticket Refund’ form, fill in details such as their name, contact information, transaction date, station, UTS number and booking mode, upload supporting documents, and submit their grievance.

The complaint is then processed in coordination with the State Bank of India, which handles the payment gateway, and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), which runs the RailOne platform. Once verified, refunds are usually issued within 5–7 working days.

It is to be noted that you can only file a complaint after seven days of the failed transaction. So, this might disappoint many passengers looking for a quicker resolution.
