When Is Ambubachi Mela?
The famous Ambubachi Mela takes place at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam. This festival is observed during the monsoon season. As for the temple, it is located on the Nilachal Hills and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the Hindu tradition. As per Free Press Journal, the Ambubachi Mela is also known as the Mahakumbh of the East. It holds deep religious significance among devotees across India and abroad.
This year, the festival will begin on the night of June 22. It will align with the seventh day of the Assamese month of Ahar and will continue until sunrise on June 26. The festival also draw the attention of many saints, sadhus, and tantric practitioners from across India.

Why Is The Temple Closed For 3 Days?
The Ambubachi Mela is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. This festival celebrates the annual menstruation cycle. As per Free Press Journal, devotees believe this period represents fertility, creation, and the strength of womanhood in Hindu belief. During this time, the temple follows a special tradition. It remains closed for three days, and people are not allowed to worship or perform religious rituals inside the shrine. The goddess is believed to be resting during this phase.
After remaining closed for three days, the temple opens on the fourth day. Devotees gather to seek blessings, and special cleansing rituals are also performed. A key highlight is that devotees receive a piece of red cloth called “Angabastra,” which is believed to be a holy blessing from the goddess.
