People residing in Mumbai and working in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) struggle a lot when it comes to commuting, all thanks to the never-ending traffic on that route. But things are about to change, as starting this week, BKC is going car-free every Friday. Want to know more about it? Read on.
BKC To Go Car-Free Every Friday
As per a report by News18, nearly 2,00,000 employees working in one of India’s busiest business districts are being strongly advised to take the train, metro or bus to work instead of driving or booking a cab. It is said to be a first-of-its-kind project for a corporate district anywhere in India.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is leading the push, working closely alongside BEST, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), Traffic Police, auto-rickshaw unions and WRI India. Around 90 firms and organisations operating in BKC have already given their formal support. MMRDA’s own nearly 2,000 employees and contractual staff have been directed to actively participate.

According to MMRDA officials, Friday was intentionally picked because corporate schedules tend to be more flexible on Fridays, and employees are generally less worried about punctuality, meetings are fewer, and the overall pressure is also comparatively low.
BEST at present runs over 100 buses daily across BKC, with 25,000 to 30,000 travellers already using bus services every day. Five to six feeder routes connect Bandra and Kurla railway stations directly to the district, making it easy for travellers to take trains and bus services.
What To Expect From It?
If reports are to be believed, a survey of BKC travellers found that 82% stated that they would switch to public transport if it became more trustworthy, convenient and better managed.
Not only this, but Companies are also being advised to enhance the deal with reward programmes for regular public transport passengers, reimbursement of commute expenses and internal recognition programs.
The programme will run for at least three to four months, with authorities inspecting bottlenecks every week and introducing corrective measures.
