Why Did Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 Metro Station In Delhi Get A New Name?

In Delhi, the metro station, earlier known as Mayur Vihar Pocket-1, has now been renamed. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has officially changed its name to Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar. The decision was taken after due approval from authorities and aims to give the station a clearer identity. Here’s why the change was made.

Delhi’s Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 Metro Station Renamed

Officials have completed all the formal steps needed to rename the metro station, and the new name is now officially in use. According to NDTV, DMRC will gradually update the name on signboards, metro maps, announcements, and mobile apps. The changes will happen step by step so that passengers do not face any confusion or inconvenience.

The renaming happened after the State Names Authority (SNA) of Delhi recommended it. The SNA is a 29-member committee led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. This panel looks into requests to name or rename streets, parks, colonies, roundabouts, and other public places in Delhi. However, it does not have control over areas that come under the MCD or NDMC.

Sources say the main reason behind the renaming is to reduce confusion among passengers. As per India Today, the Mayur Vihar area has several metro stations with similar names like Pocket-1 and Phase-1/Phase-2, which often confuse commuters, especially first-time visitors. By adding “Shri Ram Mandir” to the name, officials believe the station will have a clearer and more distinct identity.

Long-Standing Demand For Renaming

Local BJP MLA from Trilokpuri, Ravi Kant, welcomed the decision and thanked the Chief Minister for approving the name change. He said residents had been demanding this for many years. He also shared that he had been regularly following up with the government for the past six months to get it done.

NDTV reports that he explained that a Ram temple is located very close to the metro station. Because of this, locals wanted the station’s name to reflect the nearby landmark. Ravi Kant said members of the Sanatan Dharma Sabha met him and raised the issue. After meeting them, he wrote a letter to the government supporting their request. Other local representatives also pushed for the renaming. They believed that connecting the station’s name to Shri Ram Mandir would highlight the area’s cultural importance and also make it easier for people to identify the station.
