In the last few weeks, Karnataka has witnessed a sharp fall in egg prices. According to the farmers and traders, all happened due to export disruptions, lower seasonal demand, and ongoing religious observances. Keep reading to know more!
Egg Prices Drop In Karnataka
According to the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), the price of eggs has fallen from ₹7.06 per egg to around ₹4.60 in just 15 days. V Sheshanarayan, sales promotion officer at NECC, explained that several factors together pushed the prices down.
According to The New Indian Express, Karnataka produces about 2.2 crore eggs every day. Hosapete is the state’s biggest egg-producing region, while Mysuru follows as another major centre. A large share of these eggs moves to a processing plant in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, from where exporters send them to international markets.
However, the export chain recently faced a sudden disruption. Sheshanarayan recalled an incident from the day the war began. A container carrying 4.7 lakh eggs from Mysuru to Namakkal had to turn back midway because exports had suddenly stopped.

Why Have Egg Prices Dropped?
Normally, exporters ship around 70 lakh to one crore eggs from Namakkal to Gulf countries every day. Due to the ongoing war situation, these shipments have completely halted. This stoppage has directly affected egg prices in Karnataka and other poultry-producing regions.
The New Indian Express reported that the ongoing Ramzan festival has slightly reduced egg consumption in many places. The upcoming Easter and the start of the summer season have also played a role. Why? People consume fewer eggs during hotter months.
As a result, prices in cities such as Bengaluru and Mysuru have fallen noticeably. Sheshanarayan said the current rates remain similar across most parts of Karnataka. Shockingly, in places like Hosapete, prices are even lower by about 60 paise per egg. Despite the falling prices, poultry farms continue producing eggs every day. To manage the extra supply, producers are storing eggs in cold storage units. These facilities allow eggs to remain usable for up to three months. Some of the surplus eggs are also being converted into egg powder.
