Harsh Goenka, a well-known industrialist and chairman of Mumbai-based RPG Enterprises (RPG Group), is not afraid to speak his mind. Whether it’s about food or cities, he often shares his thoughts openly on social media. Recently, he highlighted 10 major reasons why India is still not a “tourism superpower.”
Harsh Goenka Speaks On India’s Tourism
India is an incredible country, known for its vibrant culture, rich history, iconic landmarks and amazing food. But according to Harsh Goenka, India is still not a tourism superpower. He listed 10 reasons behind this:
- Unsafe roads, no pavements and stray animals
- Garbage and lack of hygiene
- Petty corruption
- Traffic chaos
- Poor global branding and perception management
- Tourism is stuck in state-level red tape
- Pollution
- No proper city or tourist site infrastructure
- Inconsistent service standards
- Lack of civic sense
Harsh Goenka called “lack of civic sense” the biggest factor. He also highlighted that India has everything: mountains, deserts, beaches, history and spirituality, but countries like Malaysia, Turkey, Singapore, Thailand and the UAE attract more tourists each year.

Netizens React To The Post
Clearly, the points shared by Harsh Goenka are true. India offers more to see and experience than many other countries. Yet, other nations enjoy far more popularity. He also wrote, “So the issue isn’t what we have. It’s how we manage it. Potential is not our problem. Execution is,” and honestly, it’s a harsh truth.
If things are managed and executed properly, India could soon surpass these countries in tourism. Many netizens agreed with the industrialist, taking to the comments section to share their thoughts. One wrote, “I am glad you have outlined these facts that many of us have experienced.” Another user wrote, “Hard truth. We don’t lack beauty; we lack discipline. Tourism isn’t just about monuments, it’s about cleanliness, safety, systems, and civic culture.”
