On June 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a glimpse of one such tradition during his visit to Slovakia, and here’s how it unfolded.

According to First Post, Narendra Modi became the first-ever Indian Prime Minister to visit Slovakia since the nation gained independence in 1993. The PM arrived in the Slavic nation on Monday and is currently on a six-day official visit to France and Slovakia, where he is attending the G7 Summit.
After arriving in Bratislava, he was greeted with Slovakia’s highest symbol of hospitality — the traditional bread-and-salt welcome, amid vibrant cultural performances, celebrations by the Indian diaspora, and important bilateral engagements.

What Is The Significance Of This Centuries-Old Tradition?
According to reports, offering guests bread and salt is considered the highest expression of hospitality, respect, and goodwill in Slavic countries such as Slovakia. The tradition is also observed in several Baltic, non-Slavic Balkan, and Middle Eastern cultures.
In this centuries-old tradition, bread symbolises prosperity, sustenance, and the sharing of the earth’s blessings, while salt represents purification, preservation, and lasting friendship. This is also because as an essential nutrient, salt has long held a significant place in religion, culture, and tradition.
The bread-and-salt ceremony is often used to welcome visiting dignitaries, newlyweds, and other honoured guests. Typically, the host presents a loaf of bread placed on a beautifully embroidered cloth or towel. A small salt cellar, or a designated hollow in the bread, holds the salt.
As part of the ritual, the guest usually breaks off a small piece of bread, dips it in the salt, and eats it as a gesture of appreciation and goodwill.
