Water seepage has been detected in Cave 32 of the Ellora Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. This problem, which was also noticed last year, poses a threat to the 9th-century paintings present inside this world-famous site. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is now addressing the issue and planning restoration work.
Water Seepage In Historical Ellora Caves
Ellora Caves or Verul Leni, located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site. Famous for its rock-cut architecture, this historical cave complex represents three ancient religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. However, just like last year, water seepage has been detected in its caves.
As per a report by The New Indian Express, an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) official stated that the seepage started naturally and poses a threat to the 9th-century paintings it houses. A tourist guide who recently visited the Jain Cave No. 32 also mentioned that a similar problem occurred last year, and work was carried out to rectify it.

ASI To Review The Issue Carry Restoration Work
As per the same report, a local ASI official has written to the conservation sector regarding the problem. A review will be conducted before the work and repair process begins. Moreover, the exact source of the seepage is difficult to pinpoint because the area inside the cave is quite large.
Co-convenor of the heritage organisation INTACH, Swapnil Joshi, shared with TNIE that Ellora is quite different from Ajanta Caves (another historical UNESCO World Heritage site). He added that these caves have more paintings, and the water seepage can significantly damage them. It is quite important to address the issue at the earliest.
The Ellora Caves are a very important part of our Indian history. Built between 6th and 10th centuries, they offer valuable insights into the religion, culture, and art of ancient India. We hope the water seepage problem is addressed soon so that the place suffers no further damage.
