Two Indian Visa Centres Shut In Bangladesh Amid Rising Security Concerns

India has temporarily closed two visa application centres in Bangladesh due to security concerns linked to ongoing unrest and protests in the country. The centres located in Khulna and Rajshahi will remain shut until further notice from the authorities. Here is everything you need to know about the development.

Two Indian Visa Centres Shut In Bangladesh

According to a report by The Indian Express, India has shut down two Indian Visa Application Centres (IVACs) in Bangladesh. One centre is located in Khulna, while the other operates in Rajshahi. Authorities took this decision in view of the current security situation in the country. Applicants who had already booked appointment slots at these centres will be given a later date for the visa process once services resume.

On Wednesday, the Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka was also temporarily shut due to protests taking place outside the Indian High Commission. However, visa processing later resumed at the centre. It should be noted that Bangladesh has five Indian Visa Application Centres in total. Apart from Dhaka, Khulna, and Rajshahi, the other two centres are located in the northeastern port city of Chattogram and in Sylhet.

Security Concerns Rise Near Indian High Commission

As per a report by The Indian Express, the IVAC located at Dhaka’s Jamuna Future Park is the main integrated centre for all Indian visa services in the capital. Reports suggest that security concerns are rising in the neighbouring country, with dozens of people protesting against India outside the Indian High Commission. According to a report by ABP Live, police erected barricades nearly 100 metres before the commission. This was done to prevent protesters from moving further. Similar protests were also reported in Khulna on Thursday.

Due to the unrest in Bangladesh, visa applicants are expected to face appointment rescheduling and processing delays. Tourists, medical travellers who frequently visit Indian hospitals for treatment, and students pursuing education in India could also be impacted.
