Indian Railways Cancels Bengaluru Airport MEMU Trains; Passengers Are Fuming

Mainline Electric Multiple Unit trains operated by South Western Railway run to take passengers to the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. These MEMU trains are a great mode of transportation as these help everyone to travel to several corners of the Karnataka capital. In a recent development, the South Western Railway decided to cancel these trains to travel to and from the Kempegowda International Airport halt railway station

This Is Why South Western Railway Cancelled MEMU Trains

On 31 May 2023, the official Twitter account of South Western Railway (@SWRRLY) shared all the information about cancelling these trains in Bengaluru’s outskirts.

The decision to cancel MEMU trains to the airport railway station has been taken because of “poor patronisation (less than 5% occupancy)”, as shared by the South Western Railway. The number of patrons catching these MEMU trains has decreased a lot recently. The numbers have reached below 5 per cent. Along with the issue of fewer passengers to travel on these trains, there is another problem of a shortage of staff, according to a report by Zee News.

Bengaluru is known for its infamous traffic. Along with traffic, cab fares are very expensive as well. Trains like these are a great way to commute to and from the airport. Though passenger volume is very less at the moment, the people who need these trains for commuting are very angry with the news of cancellation. Many people are expressing their views on various social media platforms. With no MEMU trains, the traffic jam is increasing in many places and travelling on the road costs more than purchasing train tickets. It is turning out to be an issue for people planning to reach the airport.
