Mumbai is now home to India’s largest community toilet block. Located in Asia’s largest slum, Dharavi, the toilet complex named Suvidha Kendra was built by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation. Maharashtra’s Tourism, Environment and Protocol Minister Aaditya Thackeray inaugurated this toilet block on February 9. Read on to know more.
Mumbai’s Dharavi Has India’s Largest Toilet Complex
BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC) launched a two-storey community toilet block in Asia’s largest slum locality, Dharavi in Mumbai. The toilet block built under the Suvidha Project shall have 111 toilet seats, thus becoming India’s largest community toilet block. Thackeray took to Twitter to announce the opening of the toilet block, further revealing that they are committed in their endeavour to improve the living standards of the residents by giving them access to sanitation, hygiene and clean water. The community centre shall benefit the 50,000 residents with RO drinking water, laundry service and bathing facilities.

Eco-Friendly Toilet Complex Has Solar Panels & Rain Water Harvesting Facilities
Moreover, there’s an eco-friendly route taken to put this project into action. According to a report by The Free Press Journal, the facility has an inbuilt greywater treatment plant, rainwater harvesting facilities and also utilises solar panels to generate energy. Through these eco-friendly measures, over 6.5 million litres of freshwater will be saved. The largest community toilet will ensure safe, accessible and hygienic toilets for feminine hygiene needs, people with disabilities and others. Suvidha Kendras will soon come up in 10 more locations in Chembur, Bandra, Govandi, Dharavi, Ghatkopar and Santacruz. Take a walk through Dharavi through this Curly Tales video.
