Mexico recently got a new state-of-the-art international airport that is set to make travelling in the country easier, quicker and more convenient. The Tulum International Airport, which is officially known as the Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum Felipe Carrillo Puerto, was inaugurated on December 1, 2023. From facts to facilities, here are all of the important details that you would need to know about this newly unveiled international airport in Mexico’s Tulum.

1. Sustainability Is Prioritised 

According to an article which was published by Mex Rent A Car, one of the top priorities of this airport is sustainability and environmental concerns. Hence, in order to ensure that the airport is as eco-friendly as possible, it features a runway which is 2.3 miles or 3.7 kilometres long. This runway is longer than the one at the Cancun Airport. This will allow for more environmentally friendly take-offs as well as cargo plane landings.

2. Passenger Capacity Of The Airport And Future Expansion

The airport is one of the most robust ones in the world. It has a capacity to handle 5.5 million passengers per year as well as 32,000 flight operations. In future, it plans on adding three more runways at the airport which would increase its capacity to 40 million passengers a year!

3. Parking And Security

The airport has a spacious parking area so that passengers can easily access the airport. The security of the airport is overviewed by the Mexican National Guard and Army. They’re employing state-of-the-art scanners and closed circuits to ensure safety.

4. Energy Efficiency At The Airport And Size

The parking area mentioned above will be covered with solar panels which will improve the energy efficiency of the airport. The airport spans 3,000 acres and is perched at an elevation of 20 metres above mean sea level.

5. Proximity To The Town

The airport is located around 18 miles or almost 29 kilometres from the town. The journey would only take around 30 minutes. This means that the airport could potentially revolutionise the travel industry within Mexico.

6. Named After A Yucatan Politician

The official name of the Tulum International Airport is in honour of a Yucatan politician by the name of Felipe Carrillo Puerto. He was born in 1874 and was a prominent journalist, politician and revolutionary. Felipe Carrillo Puerto also served as the Governor of Yucatan between 1922 and 1924. He is known for his efforts at reconciliation between the Mexican government and the Yucatec Maya after the caste war.
